What do we know about tretinoin?
Tretinoin is a cancer (antineoplastic)
medication. Tretinoin interferes with the
growth of cancer cells and slows their growth
and spread in the body. Tretinoin is used
in the treatment of acute promyelocytic
leukemia (a type of blood cancer). Tretinoin
at times may also be prescribed or used
for reasons and purposes other than those
that have been listed here.
What should I discuss with
my healthcare provider before taking tretinoin?
Do not take tretinoin without
first talking to your doctor if you have
had a reaction to another retinoid (e.g.,
Accutane, Retin-A, Renova) or to a medicine
that contained a paraben drug preservative;
liver problems; or an infection. You may
not be able to take tretinoin, or you may
require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring
during treatment if you have any of the
conditions listed above. Do not take tretinoin
if you are pregnant or if you could become
pregnant during or for one month following
treatment with tretinoin. Tretinoin is in
the FDA pregnancy category D. This means
that tretinoin can cause severe birth defects
in an unborn baby. It can also cause miscarriage,
premature birth, or death of the baby. A
pregnancy test with negative results should
be obtained within one week of starting
treatment with tretinoin. A pregnancy test
may be repeated each month during treatment.
Two reliable forms of birth control should
be used at the same time (unless abstinence
is the chosen method of birth control) during
and for at least 1 month following treatment.
If you become pregnant, stop using birth
control, or miss your menstrual period,
immediately notify your doctor. It is not
known whether tretinoin passes into breast
milk. Do not take tretinoin without first
talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding
a baby.
How should I use tretinoin?
Take this medication exactly
as it has been prescribed by your physician
or health care provider. If you do not fully
understand the directions that have been
given to you, ask your pharmacist, nurse,
or doctor to explain them to you. Tretinoin
should only be prescribed by a qualified
healthcare provider experienced in the use
of cancer chemotherapeutic agents. Be sure
to take each dose of this medication with
a full glass of water. Tretinoin is usually
taken twice a day. Follow your doctor's
instructions. Your doctor will probably
want you to have regularly scheduled blood
tests and other medical evaluations during
treatment with tretinoin to monitor progress
and side effects. Store tretinoin at or
around room temperature and keep away from
moisture, heat, and light.

tretinoin, do immediately get emergency

an allergic reaction (including difficulty
breathing; closing of the throat; swelling
of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
the retinoic-acid-APL syndrome (fever, shortness
of breath, weight gain, and lung and heart
problems); or increased pressure in the
brain (headache, nausea and vomiting, visual
disturbances). Other, less serious but notable
side effects may also occur when using this
medication. Continue to take tretinoin and
talk to your doctor if you experience: tiredness
or weakness; headache; fever; dryness of
skin, lips and mouth; bone or muscle pain;
nausea and vomiting; rash or itching; mouth
and lip sores; increased sweating; temporary
hair loss; shivering; or swelling of hands

reported. Discuss with your doctor any side
effect that occurs during treatment with
